Canopy Calling

You meant the world to me once long ago,
And though our lives no longer bear the time
For us to climb into the sky and throw
Another stone to know we are still there,
I turn my stare to thoughts that blur in mist
And shake my fist with hope for you to see
That need for me inside your life exists
Must once again resist the mystery
Of why it is we keep apart and fade
Into the shade each time we try again
To hug and grin and laugh and kiss and trade
Grenades that ache beneath our weary skin.
We climb and stand upon such brittle leaves,
To only cut the stems and feel like thieves.
